On Monday, August 17, two people were killed in a plane crash near the McAllen Miller International Airport.
According to McAllen Police Department and the Texas Department of Public Safety, the plane went down shortly after it had taken off. It was around 6.45 p.m. when it crashed near a levee close to the airport just south of Runway 13. It was a Zenair CH 2000 trainer single engine fixed wing plane and on board was a student pilot and the flight instructor although it is not known who was in control at the time of the crash.
The reason for the crash is not yet known although the wind speed was 21 miles per hour and at times was gusting to more than 27 miles per hour. Visibility was good at around eight miles.
The Federal Aviation Administration is continuing to investigate and the National Transportation Safety Board has been notified.
