On Monday July 13, a drunken driver died following a police chase.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the accident happened just after midnight at the intersection of Mile 6 1/2 and Mile 12 just north of Weslaco.
The incident began when the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home on Geronimo Street in rural Weslaco where they were told an assault was in progress. When deputies arrived, 27 year old Claudia Esmeralda Colunga, was reportedly highly intoxicated and behind the wheel of her Jeep Cherokee causing property damage. Her four year old daughter was also in the vehicle. She then left the scene and a pursuit began which lead north along Mile 6 1/2 until Colunga crashed through a barricade and the car flipped over several times. It rolled around 30 yards and then smashed into two parked vehicles.
It took authorities around three hours to extricate Colunga from the vehicle but she died at the scene. Her daughter was not buckled in, and where the booster seat was situated was totally crushed after the impact. She was taken to McAllen Medical Center with just cuts and bruises and was released.
