Man Hit by Car in Hit and Run

Early on Friday morning, January 1, a man was hit by a car in a hit and run and is now critical.

According to Welasco police, the incident happened at around 3 a.m. on the Expressway 83. Anthony Nuncio aged 27 and of San Benito was driving fast westbound in a grey Buick south on Bridge Avenue. He then ran a stop sign which was at the bridge and frontage road. He went through the median onto the expressway and hit the concrete barrier. He then got out of his car and was trying to cross the highway when he was hit.

According to witnesses they think he was hit by a Lincoln. Both the Lincoln and the car behind, an F 250 stopped and walked around presumably to see what they hit. It is not known if they discovered the victim who was lying on the grass, but they then returned to their vehicles and drove away.

Nuncio was taken to McAllen Medical Center in a critical condition and had surgery on his left leg and his hip.

Woman Killed in a Car Crash in Edinburg

On Friday afternoon, November 6, a woman was killed in a car crash in Edinburg.

According to the Edinburg Police Department, the accident happened on Expressway 281. A family of three was traveling north on Expressway 281 by El Cibolo Road in a Hyundai Sonata being driven by the husband. The vehicle suddenly veered to the right and rear ended a tractor trailer which was parked on the shoulder.

The man and child, a 7 year old girl, in the vehicle were taken to Doctors Hospital at Renaissance in Edinburg where they are currently in a critical condition and the mother, 42 year old Clarissa Tovar of McAllen died at the scene.

The truck driver was uninjured and it is still not known why the car veered to the right.

The Expressway 281 was closed at the El Cibolo Road exit as the police began their investigation.

Child Was Killed in Car Accident

On Sunday, September 20, a child was killed in a car accident in Mission.

According to Texas Department of Public Safety the accident happened on Buena Vida and North Moorefield. A Ford F 350 was traveling south on Moorefield and was attempting to make a left turn onto Jovanna Street. However the driver did not yield to the right of way and smashed straight into another vehicle.

In the second vehicle was a two year old child and she was not restrained. The child was taken to McAllen Medical where she died the following day. In addition one other person was taken to hospital where their condition is unknown.

The Ford driver was arrested for intoxication assault initially but following the death of the young girl, it is expected that the charges will be increased.

The law in Texas states that seat belts must be worn, however, in 2014, there were over 2,500 crashes where people were not restrained which led to them either being killed or sustaining serious injuries.

A Drunken Driver Died Following a Police Chase

On Monday July 13, a drunken driver died following a police chase.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the accident happened just after midnight at the intersection of Mile 6 1/2 and Mile 12 just north of Weslaco.

The incident began when the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home on Geronimo Street in rural Weslaco where they were told an assault was in progress. When deputies arrived, 27 year old Claudia Esmeralda Colunga, was reportedly highly intoxicated and behind the wheel of her Jeep Cherokee causing property damage. Her four year old daughter was also in the vehicle. She then left the scene and a pursuit began which lead north along Mile 6 1/2 until Colunga crashed through a barricade and the car flipped over several times. It rolled around 30 yards and then smashed into two parked vehicles.

It took authorities around three hours to extricate Colunga from the vehicle but she died at the scene. Her daughter was not buckled in, and where the booster seat was situated was totally crushed after the impact. She was taken to McAllen Medical Center with just cuts and bruises and was released.
